Introduction to the Brightin Star 9mm F5.6
The whole landscape in a single frame: distant mountains, dramatic skies and lines that guide the eye toward infinity. The Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 opens the door to that kind of image that, with other lenses, simply doesn’t fit.

This manual ultra wide-angle lens came to my hands thanks to Brightin Star’s trust, who decided to continue the collaboration started with the Brightin Star 16mm F2.8. I want to thank them for the support and, above all, the freedom to test the lens in real conditions, without rush or constraints.
This review comes from field experience: between humid forests, windy beaches and silent sunrises. It is there where the Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 shows its true nature: a creative tool that, without being perfect, inspires you to see differently.
Brightin Star 9mm F5.6: First Impressions
If you already read my review of the Brightin Star 16mm F2.8, you’ll remember that the box aesthetics caught my attention. It has a typography that takes me back to the eighties, as if you were handling an old VHS instead of a modern lens. That feeling repeats itself with the 9mm, which also arrives in simple but effective packaging.
Upon opening the box, the lens is well protected in dense foam. It comes with front and rear caps. Additionally, it includes three 34 mm filters:
- ND1000 (10 stops)
- ND64 (6 stops)
- Natural Night (reduces light pollution in night scenes)
These filters are placed in the rear part instead of the front. It’s a practical and unusual solution in this price range. But we must keep in mind that using them changes the focus scale. I won’t go too deep into this since I don’t usually use this type of filter in my photography. But still, it’s something to consider.

The lens is compact and lightweight. The metal body conveys robustness, something not always found in this price range. For those looking for an ultra wide-angle lens for landscape or architecture, it is very comfortable to carry.
The Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 is completely manual, both in focus and aperture. The ring has small clicks that help select the aperture precisely. It also includes visual markings in white and orange, including the lines to calculate the hyperfocal. This is key in landscape photography, where you want to ensure sharpness from foreground to horizon.

Field Test: Extreme Landscape with an Ultra Wide Angle
I took the Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 to various locations to test it in real landscape conditions. From wind-battered cliffs to humid forests with fog, passing through beaches open to the Atlantic. Places where an ultra wide-angle lets you explore new perspectives, letting creativity flow with compositions different from the usual ones.
The 132º coverage on full frame is surprising from the first shot. The frame is immense, but being a rectilinear lens it doesn’t suffer the typical deformation of a fisheye. Straight lines remain reasonably well, which is greatly appreciated when horizons or architectural elements are in the composition. But we must keep in mind that there is distortion, although we will see that later.
Different Perspectives
One of the strengths of this ultra wide-angle is how it plays with the perspective of elements you place outside the center. The extreme coverage makes them stretch or deform slightly, creating lines that capture attention.


In the waterfall photo, the twisted branch crossing the upper part gains much more presence thanks to the lens effect. The result is a natural frame that directs attention toward the water fall, adding strength and dynamism to the composition.
In the coastal photograph, the rocks I placed in the foreground guide our view toward the pierced rock and the cliffs in the background. As a result we get a different, more extreme photograph where we play with visual lines.
General Aspects
One of the most interesting uses was including foreground, midground and background without losing depth. By focusing around 30–50 cm and working with apertures like F8, F11 or even F16, the depth of field becomes almost infinite. The lens thus becomes a good tool for applying the hyperfocal technique in landscape. Keep in mind, however, that using certain apertures can be a problem if we talk about aberrations and diffraction.
That said, you must be aware of the limitations: the maximum aperture is F5.6, so in low-light situations it’s not the brightest. If you work with a tripod, no problem: you play with long exposures and solve it. But if there’s strong wind, moving water or elements shifting, it may force you to raise ISO more than you’d like.
Ergonomics also earn points. The focus ring is smooth and precise, and the hyperfocal markings are very useful in the field. Even without looking too much through the viewfinder, it’s easy to get sharp images throughout the scene.
In short, as a landscape lens the Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 offers a lot of versatility. It allows you to compose with large skies, highlight lines that guide the eye and add drama to any natural scene. It’s one of those lenses that invite experimentation and seeking new angles, something always appreciated in the creative process and providing a breath of fresh air.
It’s the lens I use when I want to experiment, try new perspectives and step off the marked path.

Optical Performance: Sharpness, Corners and Aberrations
The optical performance of the Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 surprises with the visual character offered by such an extreme format. It’s not a perfect lens nor does it pretend to be, but the balance between sharpness, distortion control and character makes it an interesting option for landscape photography.
Center Sharpness
Center sharpness is quite acceptable. Already at full aperture, F5.6, it offers good quality and good microcontrast. Fine details in rocks, trees and grass appear reasonably defined, without major loss of texture.
Stopping down to F8 slightly improves overall performance, while at F11 and F16 diffraction begins to appear. It’s preferable not to stop down that far if you can avoid it, although it wouldn’t be a catastrophe.
In terms of global contrast, the lens maintains a balanced behavior, without washed-out zones or excessive internal flare.
Corner Performance
In the corners there is a noticeable drop in sharpness, something common in such extreme rectilinear optics. Even stopping down, total uniformity is not achieved.
This drop is mainly due to field curvature and the complex geometric correction required by a 9mm lens without fisheye effect.
For most landscape applications, the loss is not critical, but in architecture or images with precise lines it may become more noticeable.
The practical interpretation is simple: if your composition depends on perfect definition at the edges, it’s better to frame a bit wider and correct slightly in post-processing.
Chromatic Aberrations and Coma
Chromatic aberrations are not well controlled. In strong contrasts (dark branches against a bright sky or a light source, for example) violet or green fringing can appear, but it is easily corrected in processing.
Another detail I detected in cases like the previous one is the appearance of some parasitic light when strong light sources are behind the subject.
Vignetting
Vignetting is noticeable, especially at full aperture, with a drop in light in the corners.
In many cases, especially in landscape, it can even be aesthetically pleasing, as it helps direct the eye toward the main point. If you prefer to remove it, software correction is immediate and with no loss of quality.
Geometric Distortion
The Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 is a rectilinear lens, not a fisheye, so it tries to keep lines as straight as possible. Barrel distortion is minimal and only noticeable in architectural scenes with very defined horizons or vertical lines near the edges.
For landscape photography, performance is good: the horizon remains relatively natural and shapes have acceptable deformation. It’s one of the best optical features of this model considering its extreme focal length.
Focusing and Hyperfocal
Focus is completely manual and has distance markings and hyperfocal lines, something unusual in this price range. With an aperture of F8 and focusing between 30 and 50 cm, it is possible to obtain fairly acceptable sharpness from foreground to infinity.

The focus ring is smooth, precise and with enough travel for controlled adjustment, although it doesn’t have hard stops at the end of the range.
This feature makes it a very predictable tool in the field, ideal for tripod work and long exposures in landscape.

Flares and Sunstars: The Creativity of Light
Flare is present when shooting directly into the sun, but its behavior is more than acceptable for a lens in this range. It is not very intrusive, but in certain sun positions there are artifacts that can be avoided by reframing or shading the lens.
The most interesting aspect is the 10-point sunstars that appear when stopping down the aperture.
For landscape photography with low sun or artificial night lights, it is a spectacular visual resource.

Conclusion: Who Is the Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 For?
The Brightin Star 9mm F5.6 is not a perfect lens, but it is a creative tool with a very tight price for what it offers. If you like wide landscape photography, playing with foregrounds and depth, it will give you a lot to work with.
Don’t expect a super sharp lens because it isn’t, but it will give you a lot of room for different and extreme compositions.
If you’re looking for clinical sharpness and perfect performance up to the edges, this is not the right lens. But if you want to expand your way of seeing, try extreme compositions and explore landscapes with new eyes, it’s hard to find something better for this price.
