Introduction to the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8
This review is particularly important to me because Brightin Star sent me this lens several weeks before its official launch.
I always appreciate it when a brand trusts my work, but in this case it also comes with added responsibility. Reviewing a lens before it reaches the market means starting almost from scratch: there was virtually no information available beyond a few technical specifications provided by the manufacturer.
Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to test several Brightin Star lenses. Some genuinely impressed me with their price-to-performance ratio, while others left me feeling there was still room for improvement. That’s why I was especially curious to see where this new 14mm F2.8 would fit within the lineup.
On paper, it looks very promising: a full-frame manual ultra-wide-angle lens with a compact design, a very short minimum focusing distance and, above all, the ability to use standard 82mm screw-in filters—something that’s quite unusual for a lens of this type.
That said, specifications only tell part of the story.
In this review, I’ll take a closer look at its build quality, ergonomics, optical performance and real-world behavior in landscape photography, which is the type of photography I primarily tested it for.
And, as is often the case, everything starts with first impressions.
Let’s get started!
First Impressions
There’s always a moment I enjoy whenever a new lens arrives: taking it out of the box and seeing what kind of impression it makes before it even goes on the camera.
This time, my curiosity was even greater. The Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 arrived well before its official release, which also meant that I knew very little about it beyond the information provided by Brightin Star.
Before talking about sharpness, flare resistance or chromatic aberrations, there’s an initial contact that I think is worth discussing: what kind of impression does this lens make the moment you pick it up?
The answer was very positive from the very beginning.
Packaging and Product Identity: A Consistent Brand Image
The packaging follows exactly the same visual identity I’ve already seen on other Brightin Star lenses, such as the 9mm, 16mm and 35mm.
The colors, graphic design and overall layout are immediately recognizable and create a strong sense of continuity across the lineup. It may seem like a minor detail, but I personally appreciate that kind of consistency between products.

That distinctive retro aesthetic is also still present—something I’ve mentioned in previous reviews. There’s something about the design that inevitably reminds me of late-1990s consumer electronics. It’s entirely subjective, of course, but I think it gives Brightin Star a personality that sets it apart from many other brands.
It obviously doesn’t affect the lens’ performance, but it does contribute to the overall ownership experience.
First Hands-On Impressions: Solid Build and Excellent Finish
If I had to describe this lens in a single word, it would be solid.
The Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 feels considerably more robust than I expected. Its all-metal construction is very well finished, with no noticeable play or loose parts, and the perceived build quality is clearly better than that of previous Brightin Star lenses I’ve tested.
I also like the overall design. It’s clean, functional and free from unnecessary styling. It doesn’t try to stand out visually—it simply feels like a tool built to be used outdoors.
And that’s something I particularly appreciate in a fully manual lens.
Technical Specifications
Before receiving the lens, I asked Brightin Star to provide the technical information necessary to prepare this review.
Here are its main specifications:

Based on these specifications, everything suggests that this lens is primarily aimed at landscape and architectural photography. That’s why my evaluation focuses almost entirely on real-world field testing.
True Manual Control: Focusing and Hyperfocal Distance

Since this is a fully manual lens, one of the first things I wanted to evaluate was the quality of its controls.
When shooting landscapes, I usually work with a tripod and take my time, so a well-designed focusing ring is just as important to me as the optical performance itself.
The focus ring offers a long, smooth throw, allowing for very precise adjustments, whether I’m working with close foreground elements or setting the hyperfocal distance. Likewise, the aperture ring feels equally satisfying to use, with well-defined clicks from F2.8 to F22.
One feature I particularly appreciated was the inclusion of depth-of-field and hyperfocal distance markings, clearly engraved on the lens barrel.
On paper, these markings are a useful feature. The real question, however, was whether they would actually prove accurate in the field.
This time, they did.
I mention this because the Brightin Star 16mm F2.8 I reviewed some time ago had distance markings that didn’t perfectly match the lens’s actual behavior. By contrast, the markings on this 14mm proved reliable throughout my field testing.
That makes it much quicker to work when maximum depth of field is required, without constantly relying on live-view magnification.

A Small Area for Improvement
The focus ring rotates quite smoothly. On a couple of occasions in the field, I accidentally moved it slightly while handling the camera without noticing.
It’s not a major issue, but I would have appreciated a little more resistance—or perhaps some sort of locking mechanism—to help prevent accidental adjustments.
Filter System: An Elegant Solution for a 14mm Lens
If there’s one feature that immediately caught my attention, it was the way Brightin Star designed the filter system.


Despite being an ultra-wide-angle lens with a prominent front element, it remains compatible with standard 82mm screw-in filters thanks to a clever design: a small fixed built-in hood combined with a removable metal outer hood that incorporates the filter thread.
For me, that’s a significant advantage.

A large part of my landscape photography relies on circular polarizers, and whenever conditions call for it, I also use neutral density filters for long-exposure work. Being able to keep using the same filter system I already own, without investing in bulky dedicated holders, makes field work much simpler while also reducing costs.

The image above, for example, was captured using an ND filter to extend the exposure time and smooth the movement of the water. It’s a type of photography I regularly shoot, so this compatibility makes a real difference.
The entire system also feels robust and well-built, matching the overall quality of the lens.
My only real criticism is that the outer hood cannot be removed while the front cap is attached, and the cap itself cannot be fitted when a filter is mounted. It doesn’t affect normal use, but it’s a small practical limitation worth being aware of.
In the Field: Real-World Performance of the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8
Technical specifications are useful, but a lens ultimately proves itself in real-world use.
For this review, I took it to several locations where I regularly shoot: forests, coastal landscapes, and scenes with extremely close foreground subjects. My goal was to evaluate how it performs in practical situations, paying particular attention to hyperfocal accuracy, sharpness across different apertures, vignetting, and corner performance.
Sharpness and Hyperfocal Performance
My first test had two objectives: to verify whether the hyperfocal markings were accurate and to evaluate how sharpness evolved as the aperture was stopped down.
For this test, I chose a woodland scene featuring a foreground subject positioned very close to the minimum focusing distance, with a waterfall in the background. Every image was captured using an 82mm circular polarizer to replicate a realistic field setup.
The results were as follows:
- F2.8: Overall sharpness is too soft for landscape photography. Better suited to creative applications or scenes where focus is intentionally placed on a specific subject.
- F4: Background sharpness improves noticeably, but the foreground remains clearly out of focus. I still wouldn’t consider this an ideal landscape aperture.
- F5.6: Sharpness increases significantly and the midground becomes much better defined. The foreground remains limited by its extremely close distance, but this is already a very usable aperture.
- F8: This is where the lens really reaches its sweet spot. It delivers an excellent balance between depth of field and sharpness, with consistently strong performance across the frame.
- F11: Image quality remains excellent while providing slightly greater depth of field. A small amount of diffraction becomes visible when inspecting the image at 100%, although in real-world use it remains an outstanding choice.
- F16: The increased depth of field brings much more of the foreground into acceptable focus, although diffraction is now clearly visible during close inspection.
- F22: Nearly the entire scene falls within the depth of field, but diffraction causes a noticeable loss of fine detail. I would reserve this aperture only for situations where maximum depth of field takes priority over ultimate sharpness.
The gallery below illustrates how both depth of field and sharpness evolve across the different aperture settings.
Balanced Optical Performance

After several field tests, the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 left me with a very positive impression.
Its best performance comes between F8 and F11, where it delivers an excellent balance between sharpness, depth of field, and diffraction control. For most landscape photography situations, these are the apertures I would choose without hesitation.
If the composition requires extremely close foreground subjects, F16 is a good alternative, accepting a slight loss of fine detail due to diffraction. F22, on the other hand, is an aperture I would reserve only for very specific situations where maximum depth of field is more important than ultimate image quality.
Another aspect that pleasantly surprised me was the accuracy of the hyperfocal distance markings. Throughout my testing, they performed exactly as expected, something I particularly appreciated after my less satisfying experience with the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8. Being able to trust those markings in the field makes working much faster without sacrificing precision.
Center vs. Corners
To evaluate corner performance, I chose a photograph taken along the coast of Valdoviño. It isn’t a laboratory test with resolution charts or perfectly controlled conditions, but rather a real-world scene—which is ultimately where this lens is meant to be used.

I composed the image so that both the center and the corners contained subjects positioned at similar distances, making the comparison as representative as possible.
The photograph was taken at F8, which I consider this lens’s sweet spot. The sample images shown here have only been processed from the RAW files, without any optical corrections or additional sharpening.



Distortion and Horizon Rendering
Every ultra-wide-angle lens exhibits some level of distortion, and the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 is no exception.
During my tests, I noticed an interesting behavior when photographing wide horizons. Once the image is perfectly leveled, the distance between the horizon and a parallel reference line isn’t completely consistent across the frame. Instead, the horizon shows a slight tendency to “drop” toward the edges.
This isn’t an especially pronounced or problematic distortion for most real-world situations, but it’s worth keeping in mind when photographing seascapes or compositions where the horizon plays a major visual role.
The following image illustrates this behavior more clearly.

In practice, this rarely became an issue during my testing and is simply part of the expected behavior of an ultra-wide lens with this angle of view.
Vignetting
I began by testing the lens without any filters installed in order to establish a baseline.
At F2.8, there is clearly visible optical vignetting, which is entirely expected from a 14mm F2.8 ultra-wide-angle lens. The light falloff is evenly distributed across all four corners, and I found no evidence of mechanical vignetting.

Adding only the adapter produced virtually identical results. If the adapter introduces any additional vignetting, it’s so minimal that it’s almost impossible to notice in real-world images. In practice, the adapter itself isn’t an issue.

Vignetting with Filters
Things change once a standard 82mm screw-in filter is installed.
With a single filter attached, additional mechanical vignetting becomes visible in the corners at F2.8. However, as the aperture is stopped down, the effect is significantly reduced and becomes almost negligible at the apertures I typically use for landscape photography.


I also wanted to push the test a little further by stacking two filters.
In this configuration, mechanical vignetting becomes very obvious, with significant darkening affecting all four corners of the image.

Personally, I rarely stack two filters except in very specific situations, so I don’t consider this a major limitation for my own workflow. It’s also worth noting that the severity of the effect depends heavily on the thickness of the filters themselves. Using slim-profile filters would likely reduce the amount of vignetting to some extent.
Vignetting Summary
Overall, I don’t consider vignetting to be a major concern with this lens.
Without filters, the behavior is exactly what I’d expect from a 14mm f/2.8 lens. Adding a single filter introduces some additional corner darkening, although most of it disappears once the lens is stopped down. Only when stacking two filters does the vignetting become truly significant.
In any case, it’s a very straightforward issue to correct during RAW processing and never affected any of the photographs I captured throughout this review.
Chromatic Aberration
Another aspect I wanted to evaluate was chromatic aberration, a common optical issue in ultra-wide-angle lenses, particularly in high-contrast situations such as tree branches against a bright sky, sunlit buildings, or dark subjects silhouetted against bright backgrounds.
Throughout my field testing, I paid close attention to this behavior by inspecting the RAW files without applying any automatic lens corrections.
Overall, I came away with a very positive impression. Even in demanding scenes, I found very little noticeable color fringing, and in the few extreme backlit situations where it did appear, it was minor and easily removed during post-processing..
Sunstars, Flares, and Backlight Performance
Backlit scenes are often among the most demanding situations for any lens, especially when the sun is directly inside the frame.
During my testing, I found that the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 struggles to produce well-defined sunstars in certain situations. Compared to other Brightin Star lenses I’ve previously tested, the sunstars appear somewhat softer and less pronounced. When the sun shines directly into the lens, flare and internal reflections can also become quite noticeable.

The following images illustrate this behavior quite well.


Starting from that second exposure, I was able to complete the post-processing without much difficulty and produce a perfectly usable final image.

Only a few seconds passed between the first and second photographs. Simply waiting for the sun to move slightly behind the vegetation and making a subtle change to the framing was enough to significantly reduce the flare and make post-processing much easier.
Rather than considering this a serious flaw, I see it as a characteristic that photographers should simply be aware of. With a bit of care when composing the shot, it’s relatively easy to minimize these effects and achieve very satisfying results.
Landscape Photography: Where This Lens Really Excels
If I had to sum up my experience after several weeks of testing this lens, one impression stands out above all the others.
This is a lens that encourages you to get close to your foreground, explore the scene, and look for more dynamic compositions. Ultimately, that’s probably why I enjoyed using it so much, regardless of whether I was photographing coastlines, forests, or waterfalls.

Coastal Photography: Making the Most of 14mm
If there’s one environment where the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 truly impressed me, it’s along the coast.
A 14mm focal length allows for incredibly immersive compositions, especially when working with close foreground elements. The short 20cm minimum focusing distance gives you the freedom to move right up to rocks, textures, and other foreground subjects, turning them into an essential part of the composition.
During several sessions at Virxe do Porto and Punta Frouxeira, I took full advantage of this capability. The rock formations naturally guided the viewer’s eye toward the chapel or the lighthouse, while the side light from the setting sun emphasized the textures of the stone and helped separate the different layers of the landscape.


This is exactly where a 14mm lens begins to make sense. It’s not simply about fitting more into the frame, but about creating a much stronger sense of depth. Being able to position the foreground extremely close to the camera while still preserving the importance of the background gives the final composition much more impact and creates a far greater feeling of immersion.
The side lighting also produced soft shadows between the rocks, helping to define the different planes within the scene. It’s in situations like these that the 14mm focal length really shines—not because it captures more of the landscape, but because it allows foreground elements to become the true foundation of the composition without sacrificing context.
Forests, Woodlands, and Waterfalls
If the lens excels on the coast because of its ability to create expansive compositions, it’s in the forest where the combination of its short minimum focusing distance and extensive depth of field really becomes apparent.
Getting extremely close to foreground subjects without losing the surrounding environment allows you to create highly immersive images, especially when photographing ferns, moss, tree roots, or small streams. This is a style of photography where every centimeter matters, and a 14mm focal length makes it possible to include an extraordinary amount of information within the frame while maintaining a natural-looking perspective.

In locations like these, I usually work from a tripod, taking my time to focus carefully and frequently relying on hyperfocal focusing or focus stacking. This is exactly the kind of photography where manual focus doesn’t feel like a limitation—in fact, the long focus throw makes extremely precise adjustments much easier when maximum sharpness is the goal.

The photograph accompanying this section was captured at F8 using focus stacking. Combining that aperture with the stacking technique allowed me to keep both the foreground ferns and the distant trees perfectly sharp, making it an excellent example of the kind of scene where the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 truly feels at home.
Panoramas
Another aspect I really enjoyed was the lens’s performance when shooting panoramas.
In one composition, I was able to include both the chapel Virxe do Porto and the Punta Frouxeira Lighthouse in a panorama covering roughly 180°, stitched together from just seven vertical frames.

The coverage provided by a 14mm lens reduces the number of images needed, making both the capture process and the subsequent stitching much simpler.
In addition, the nature of this focal length enhances the sense of depth thanks to the strong foreground elements, something that works particularly well in panoramic images.
How Does This Lens Fit in My Camera Bag?
Throughout these weeks of testing, it was impossible not to compare this lens with the one I use most for landscape photography: the Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8L.
The Canon remains an extraordinarily versatile tool. Its zoom range allows it to adapt to almost any situation, and its optical quality is beyond question. In fact, a large part of my portfolio has been created using that lens.
But that’s exactly why it’s interesting to ask what a lens like the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 can bring to the table.
The answer lies in that extra millimeter.
On paper, it may not seem like much. However, in certain locations—especially when working very close to foreground subjects or trying to emphasize the scale of a landscape—that 14mm focal length offers a noticeably more dramatic and immersive perspective. It’s simply a different way of building a composition.
And that’s where this lens genuinely surprised me.
I expected a lens that would simply give me that extra millimeter whenever I needed it. What I didn’t expect was such convincing optical performance.
Considering its price range, I honestly believe Brightin Star has done an excellent job with this 14mm lens.
Will it replace my 15-35mm? No.
Nor do I think that’s what it’s intended to do.
But it has certainly earned a place in my camera bag for those situations where I want to push perspective just a little further.
Conclusions
After spending several weeks shooting with the Brightin Star 14mm F2.8. I’m quite certain about what surprised me the most during this review.
It wasn’t discovering a 14mm lens with an extremely wide angle of view—I expected that.
Nor was it finding a fully metal construction or a well-designed filter system.
What genuinely surprised me was seeing how much Brightin Star has improved compared to other lenses from the brand that I’ve had the opportunity to test.

Overall, this feels like a much more mature product. It’s better built, better finished, and above all, it delivers optical performance that significantly exceeded my expectations when I began this review.
Throughout my testing, it consistently performed well in the situations where I challenged it the most: extremely close foreground compositions, coastal landscapes, detailed woodland scenes, panoramas, and photographs where I needed to trust the hyperfocal distance markings completely. To me, that says far more than any specification sheet ever could.
Of course, this isn’t a perfect lens. I would have liked to see a better-designed front lens cap, and I think the focus ring could offer slightly more resistance to prevent accidental movement. Some photographers will also miss autofocus or weather sealing.
But none of those points changed my overall impression by the time I finished this review.
Because every time I reviewed the images on my computer, I kept thinking exactly the same thing:
“This lens performs really well.”
And that’s probably the best compliment I can give it.
What I Liked Most

Areas for Improvement
⚠️ The front lens cap cannot be fitted while a filter is attached.
⚠️ The outer lens hood cannot be removed without first taking off the lens cap.
⚠️ Flare can appear relatively easily in strong backlit situations.
⚠️ The focus ring could benefit from slightly more resistance to avoid accidental movement.
⚠️ No weather sealing for harsh shooting conditions.
Who Would I Recommend This Lens To?
I would particularly recommend it to landscape photographers looking for a well-built ultra-wide-angle lens with optical performance that greatly exceeds what its price would suggest.
I also think it’s an especially interesting option for photographers who already own a primary wide-angle zoom—such as a 16-35mm or 15-35mm—and want to complement it with a more extreme focal length for those compositions where that extra bit of coverage truly makes a difference.
Finally, I’d recommend it to photographers who regularly use polarizing or neutral density filters and appreciate being able to continue using standard 82mm screw-in filters, avoiding much larger and more expensive filter holder systems.
Who Wouldn’t I Recommend It To?
On the other hand, this probably isn’t the best choice for someone looking for a single wide-angle lens to cover every situation. In that case, a zoom such as a 16-35mm or 15-35mm will remain a much more versatile option.
I also wouldn’t recommend it to photographers who rely entirely on autofocus or prefer a fully automated shooting experience. This is a lens designed to encourage a slower, more deliberate approach, making the most of manual focus and careful composition.
If, on the contrary, you enjoy that slower photographic process and are looking for a dedicated landscape lens, I think this Brightin Star has a great deal to offer.
I wouldn’t recommend it as a replacement for a quality wide-angle zoom.
I’d recommend it as a complement.
And I believe that’s exactly where it shows its full potential.
Final Verdict
The Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 left me with a very positive impression.
I started this review looking for a lens that could complement my Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8L. My only goal was to gain that extra millimeter whenever a composition called for it.
What I didn’t expect was to find a lens that would also impress me with its overall performance.
The Brightin Star 14mm F2.8 delivers genuinely solid optical quality, excellent build quality, and practical features such as compatibility with standard screw-in filters—something that makes a real difference for landscape photographers.


Will it replace my 15-35mm? No.
Nor do I believe that’s what it was designed to do.
But I’m certain it will now have a permanent place in my camera bag.
Because there are compositions where that extra millimeter completely changes the image, and knowing I can achieve that without sacrificing image quality makes this a lens I’ll undoubtedly keep reaching for.
And in the end, I think that’s the best conclusion any review can have:
When you’ve finished testing a lens and the only thing you want to do is head back out into the field with it.
